Rueter-Hess Recreation

Water Recreation

Jan. 12, 2024 –  Seasonal Recreation Update

Although Rueter-Hess is closed to water access for fishing and paddle sports we remain open to land-based activities within the guidelines of the Rules and Regulations. If you plan to visit by car to hike, picnic or view wildlife, please reserve a parking spot by clicking here.

For the safety of all who use Rueter-Hess, paddle sports will not be available after the overnight temperature sinks below 37 degrees. The lower temperatures will require us to winterize the rescue boat, so no one will be allowed on the water. Fishing from the shore will be allowed until ice begins to form on the reservoir.

With that in mind, we recommend booking just one day in advance and signing up for email updates.

Scheduled days are Fridays through Mondays, beginning Memorial Day weekend through October.  Participants must provide their own watercraft (paddle board, canoe, or kayak), and life vest.

The cost is $10 per day per vehicle.  Register here.

  • Lifejackets must be worn by all participants.
  • Ages 2 to 7 may share a watercraft with a guardian. Ages 8 to 15 may have their own watercraft but a registered adult guardian must be present on the water.
  • Walk-up registration is NOT available.
  • No pets.
  • No swimming.
  • No rafts or inflatable tubes.
  • No alcohol.
