Slash Mulch / Green Yard Waste Program

The Slash-mulch and Green Yard Waste site, located in Castle Rock,  is for Douglas County residents only and is open on Saturdays from April through October, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In case of inclement weather, please call 303-663-6274 to ensure that the site will be open as scheduled.

Douglas County maintains two sites for slash drop-off, listed below.  Please note that only the Castle Rock location will receive green yard waste.

Douglas County does not cut or pick up trees that are on private property.

trucking backing up trailer with branches at slash mulch siteAcceptable items at both sites include tree limbs, loose pine needles, shrubs, brush with a maximum length of 6 feet and a maximum diameter of 12 inches.  All loads must be covered when they arrive at the site.  

During the open season, a County operated loader will be available to load free wood chips for homeowners to use as mulch.  Material can be picked up anytime during the season the site is open to accept slash.

The Site Operator has the authority to refuse loads and requires residents to reload and/or haul away materials found not to be in compliance with the regulations.

Unacceptable items include:

  • Appliances
  • Compost
  • Decorative wood chips
  • Dirt
  • Fencing
  • Grass/hay
  • Household trash/yard waste
  • Leaves
  • Lumber/pallets/railroad ties
  • Pine cones
  • Roots/stumps
  • Weeds
  • Yucca plants

Douglas County will be accepting “Green Yard Waste” at the Castle Rock location during the hours specified for Slash Mulch. No actual compost will be on the site nor will the County be actively composting material, however, the County will be contracting to compost yard waste that is delivered by residents.

For your convenience lists of acceptable and unacceptable items are listed below:

Acceptable Items:

  • Grass/hay
  • Sod
  • Leaves
  • Sawdust
  • Weeds
  • Pine Cones

Unacceptable Items: 

  • Bags of any kind
  • Bricks, concrete or rocks
  • Cardboard, paper, or styrofoam
  • Drywall
  • Food scraps
  • Glass
  • Lumber
  • Manure or pet waste
  • Metal
  • Plastic
  • Railroad ties
  • Trash of any kind

Dumping will only be allowed while the facility is staffed on Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Trumbull / Swayback Site - 7826 South Highway 67 (2.5 miles North of Deckers)

General Information

This site is open Saturdays year-round for brush/slash drop-off.

  • November to Mid- March from 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Mid-March through October from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
